Cops go three points clear

Red Lions on Sunday failed to dislodge Blue Eagles from the summit of the Super League when they went down 0-2 to the Cops at home in Zomba.

Following the victory, the Cops from Area 30 in the capital have gone three points clear as they now have 12 points from four games.

Incredibly, Eagles have scored two goals in each of the games they have played so far.

Even without their key players Micium Mhone, John Banda and Phillip Masiye, the Eagles showed characteristic grit to come out of the Lions’ den triumphant.

Schumacher Kuwali drew first blood in the eighth minute from close range.

Lions enjoyed greater ball possession, but failed to penetrate through the visitors’ defence. Their supply lines were also awful, especially in central midfield, which failed to effectively feed strikers Boniface Kaulesi and Kumbukani Mwambene.

In the second-half, the hosts started at full throttle, but sadly, they were wasteful in front of goal.

And with just three minutes to full time, John Malidadi Jnr killed any notion of an equaliser when he struck the second for Eagles.

Malidadi rifled home a well-floated ball from Kuwali.

It was a fruitful trip to the South for the Cops who beat rookies Chikwawa United 2-1 on Saturday.

This was Lions’ first league loss. They now have seven points from four games.

Their coach, Billy Phambala, conceded defeat, saying they failed to play as a team.

“We failed to tick, maybe we got carried away with the win over Azam Tigers a few days ago, but we’ll rectify our weak areas,” said Phambala.

Newcomers Karonga United returned to the North with a point after snatching a late equaliser against Blantyre United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday.

The Crocodiles of Karonga now have four points from four games.

Mafco beat Airborne Rangers 3-0 at Chitowe in Dwangwa.
